Moments of Rowing

My dear friends Paul and Bernhard Sieber are rowers and I photographed their way to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. During my time as an athlete in this sport, I realized that this sport is so much more than results. This project aims to dig a bit deeper to show the aesthetics and the sweet pain of their daily rowing routine.

The thing about „Moments of Rowing“  is the fact that my dear friend and extremely talented photographer Julius Hirtzberger achieved something what started as an simple idea of rowing-fellows grown by fascination and love to the rowing: presenting the sport and art of rowing as it is. Nothing faked, nothing filtered. Rowing in its raw beauty, brutality and aspects shown you might not expect.

This photo was taken right before their last workout before leaving for Rio. Eventually they finished 12th at their first Olympic Games.

To my mind, the result is outstanding and rarely to never seen before. It is about giving space to those ordinarily cut emotions and moments below the surface of racing and results. Thus expressing what rowing at its roots is composed of. It’s been a great experience and journey together creating this series. Thank you so much for this Julius. For more to come.
